In today’s world, environmental degradation is
becoming evident in our lives. The earth where we live in, if we were to
observe, seem to have lost its arms and legs despite the fact of being a great
provider. The resistance of the natural environment reduces, and the quality is
declined. Either causes are damages from natural calamities or anthropogenic
activities of mankind, we must play our parts and lead the way in saving and
conserving the environment.
It is our environment which helps our
ecosystem to thrive and progress. Thus, if the care and protection that it
needs are denied, we’re putting our lives at risks including the lives of
animals, plants and crops. Worldwide, the greatest effects on the health of
individuals and populations result from environmental degradation and social injustice.
The two operate in consort. (Martin Donohoe, 2003). Causes
include overpopulation, air and water pollution, deforestation, global warming,
unsustainable agricultural and fishing practices, overconsumption
("affluenza"), maldistribution of wealth, the rise of the
corporation, the Third World debt crisis, and militarization and wars. Mining
is also a destructive development activity where ecology suffers at the altar
of economy. Scientific mining operations accompanied by ecological restoration
and regeneration of mined wastelands and judicious use of geological resources,
with search for eco-friendly substitutes and alternatives must provide
sensational revelation to the impact of mining on human ecosystem (Singh and
Chauhan, 2010).
They say, if the damage has been done, you can’t do anything to bring it back to what it was before. Yet, in our case with the degradation of the environment, indeed, we can’t go back and experience the quality of before but at least we can do something to lessen its drastic impacts to the world and to our lives in order to conserve the present as for the betterment of the future.
First in the list is to start caring for the environment in our own home and front of the house. A simple cleaning will do and of course watering the plant. Don’t you feel relieved and relaxed seeing a clean environment and plants starting to grow and flourish the way we want.
We can also contribute in conserving the environment by using eco-friendly products such as eco-bag. By using these kinds of products, we can ensure our safety from dangerous chemicals, we can also help prevent pollution and avoid the use of fossil energy.
Saving the environment also includes the use
of natural fertilizers and especially waste management which is a powerful way
in protecting not only the environment but our health as well. Proper segregation
of waste materials is important to reduce the effects of improperly disposed
wastes which is beneficial to prevent health issues coming from these.
In addition, we can save the
environment by joining organizations inclined with teaching people how to
proper play their parts in taking care of the environment. As well as being a
volunteer in community clean-up drives. It is also important to start doing the
3R’s which is the reduce, reuse and recycle. Aside from these, we must conserve
water, help educate young minds, shop wisely and of course, plant trees which
is beneficial in times of heavy rainfall and in managing the air.
Let’s start saving and caring for the environment not as obligations or responsibilities but a habit or part of a lifestyle!
